Facebook Launches New Feature 'Listen With Friends'

A new feature on Facebook, is all set to ramp up the experience of listening to music online. ‘Listen with Friends’ as the feature has been christened, allows Facebook users to listen to music at the same time as their friends and discuss the tunes using Facebook Chat, with PC Mag reporting that up to 50 people will be able to listen and talk about the tracks at the same time.

Facebook product designer Alexandre Roche, in a blog post dated January 13, 2012 mentioned that- You can listen to the same song, at the exact same time - so when your favorite vocal part comes in you can experience it together, just like when you're jamming out at a performance or dance club.

‘Listen with Friends’ being a part of Facebook Chat allows users to chat online about what they are listening to. Users can also listen in as a group while one friend acts as a deejay. Up to 50 friends can listen to the same song at the same time, and chat about it. Everytime a user begins listening to music with a friend, a ‘story will be posted to her/his friends’ ticker and/or news feeds. Users will have control over who will be able to see when they are listening with a friend through their App Settings page after installing the compatible music app.

The service however can only be leveraged if both parties involved have access to the same online music programmes. Currently only Spotify and Rdio can be used in conjunction with 'Listen with Friends', although ZDNet claims that more services are set to be announced in the future.

The new feature created from collaboration between Facebook and Spotify gives users access to over 15 million songs, and will also allow them to see what tracks are trending on the site, as well as letting users share music with friends, as part of a free service. So if you weren’t addicted to Facebook already, here’s another reason to stay hooked on to this social networking website.

iTunes

Well, iTunes essentially is a media player, that let’s you play, download, and organize digital music and video files on your desktop. No prizes for guessing who introduced it- Apple Inc, ofcourse. There’s little wonder why iTunes provided the same facilities on iPod, iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. The application allows the user to purchase and manage audio and video on a personal computer, acting as a front end for Apple's QuickTime media player. iTunes has got a myriad of features, some of the most sought after ones include-Media Management, File Format Support, File Metadata , playlists, video support and books/pdf support. Now that’s one app to add to your gadget!

Google Music 

Formerly known as Music Beta by Google, this and recently re-launched as Google Music, this music streaming service/online music store might soon be locking horns with iTunes. Google music supports streaming music to desktop browsers, Android phones and tablets, or any other device that can use the Adobe Flash platform. According to the official Google blog- users can use a feature called Instant Mix to create a playlist of songs that go well together. Music imported from iTunes will retain playlists as well.

Music purchasing was absent in the initial launch, however with it’s re-launch on November 16, 2011, Google Music introduced a new version of Music, with a music store, Google+ integration, artist hubs, and purchasing reflected on T-Mobile phone bills. The only hiccup is that as of now, registrations are open to US residents only.

MySpace 

Much before the onslaught of Facebook and Twitter, MySpace founded by Chris DeWolfe and Tom Anderson was the most visited social networking website in the world. Apart from the regular social media features like moods, blurbs and blogs, comments, profile customization and redesigns, music materialized as its most sought after feature.

Although post 2008, a drastic decline in hits affected MySpace, causing it to be ranked as 103rd by total web traffic, bands and soloists still leverage MySpace to promote their music and connect with their breed. Hence the website had become a huge repository for online music. Keep surfing MySpace, one usually comes across decent material.

Reverb Nation 

Launched in 2006, but no longer an infant, ReverbNation focuses principally on the independent music industry. The purpose of the website is to bring together musicians and producers under one roof to connect and collaborate. Its special feature ‘TuneWidget’ links back to additional content, such as music recommended by the band that created the widget. A year after the website’s launch, 2007, Webs (formerly Freewebs) added a widget service that included TuneWidget as an option for its web site users. The same year the band Rehab headlined the ReverbNation summer tour.

In May, 2008, Judas Priest pre-released a track from its upcoming album on ReverbNation.

Yahoo Music 

Yahoo Music (previously known as ‘Launch’ and ‘Y! Music’) carries an extensive selection of artists, their music and biographical information. In the year 2007, Yahoo Music made it to the numero uno position in the jam-packed space of online music, in terms of audience and total time spent.

A viable range of products makes Yahho Music, an attractive destination for music lovers. Yahoo! Music Jukebox and Yahoo! Music Unlimited, Live sets (exclusive video concerts from A-list starts) and Who’s Next (where listerners vote for emerging artists) are some of the popular offerings.

SoundCloud 

In the same space as ReverbNation, SoundCloud is an online audio platform which allows collaboration, promotion and distribution of audio recordings. So, do not be flagger basted if you bump into interviews and talks aside from music.

The website was originally founded in Stockholm, Sweden, but was established in Berlin, Germany, in August 2007. The core concept was to allow musicians share recordings with each other, later SoundCloud transformed into a full publishing tool that allowed widespread distribution of audio. Soon after its commencement, the website began challening the dominance of Myspace by allowing artists to distribute music and to interact more closely with their fans.

Unlike MySpace, SoundCloud instead hosting audio in their site, allows users to upload their music with a distinctive URL. SoundCloud can also be combined with Twitter and FaceBook and has a number of apps and widgets compatible with various Operating Systems.

Last.fm 

Last.fm is a UK based music website and is most for its Audioscrobbler feature. The feature builds a detailed profile of each user’s music taste by recording details of the songs the user listens to, either from Internet radio, the user’s PC or many portable music devices and recommends music based on those details.

Its music catalogue supports full length promotional tracks and free downloads; play-on-demand features and removal. Last.fm has also collaborated with Xbox 360, and as of 2009, Last.fm claimed to have 30 million active users.

Metacritic 

Metacritic is a website for people on the lookout for music reviews. Similarities can be drawn with Rotten Tomatoes, but there are drastic variations in the scoring systems. For each product, a numerical score from each review is obtained and the total is averaged. An excerpt of each review is provided along with a hyperlink to the source. Three colour codes of Green, Yellow and Red summarize the critic's recommendation. This gives an idea of the general appeal of the product among reviewers and, to a lesser extent, the public. The scoring games are quite popular, although they have been criticized by many.

Spotify 

Another UK based online music store, although Spotify was originally founded in Sweden. Spotify uses a DRM-based music streaming service offering streaming of selected music from a range of major and independent record labels, including Sony, EMI, Warner Music Group, and Universal.

The system is compatible with many Operating systems and gadgets. Music can be browsed by artist, album, record label, genre or playlist as well as by direct searches. Users can play, download and purchase music using Spotify. Users can register either for free accounts supported by visual and radio-style advertising or for paid subscriptions without ads and with a range of extra features such as higher bitrate streams and offline access to music.

A Facebook account has been made mandatory for all new users since 22 September 2011.

MP3.com 

Named after the music file MP3, this website is probably best known for its original avatar as a legal, free music-sharing service, extremely popular amongst independent musicians. It was shut down on December 2, 2003 by CNET, which, after purchasing the domain name (but not MP3.com's technology or music assets), established the current MP3.com site.

MP3.com provides valuable information on digital music and artists, songs, services, community, trends and technologies. Ubetoo, a site similar to MP3.com is also worth surfing.

Justin Bieber & Ludacris

The contagious nature of digital media has catapulted many aspiring talents into incredible pinnacles of stardom, Justin Bieber’s being one of the most well known success stories. As of this moment, 11.11.11, time 12.15 P.M. (IST), Biber’s official music video for Baby featuring Ludacris, has registered 656,398,255 hits, placing it as the Most Watched Music Video on YouTube.

‘Baby’ is the lead single from Bieber’s debut album My World 2.0. The song’s uptempo R&B blends dance-pop and hip hop elements with visible influences of doo-wop music. 'Baby' topped the popularity charts immediately after its release and received airplay, officially impacting mainstream and rhythmic radio on January 26, 2010.

Beiber’s wide spread media attention comes from his compelling influence in the social networking sphere, as suggested by a report in the UK Newspaper ‘The Observer’. According to Jan Hoffman of The New York Times, part of Bieber's appeal stems from his YouTube channel. Long before he released his EP, My World, the YouTube videos attracted millions of views.

Bieber’s voice has unarguably won the hearts of many, from screaming teenaged fans to high profile critics, but he has been often criticized of being of looking and sounding younger than his age. There’s little wonder why ‘Baby’ being the most watched music video on YouTube, has also amassed the highest number of dislikes too, 1,981,693 to be precise. He has been mocked on various occasions for his teeny pop music and image, frequent media attention and his public display of affection towards girlfriend Selena Gomez. Bieber’s songs and image has also been the subject of a horde of jokes and parodies.

Previously, American Pop Singer Rebecca Renee Black bagged the title of the most hated video on YouTube, for her single ‘Friday’. The song didn’t go down well with the critics and was panned as the ‘worst song ever’. As of June 14, 2011, the video had received more than 3,190,000 "dislikes", before being finally taken off the site. However, despite the harsh criticism, Black did become a viral star with ‘Friday’ receiving around 167 million views on YouTube. The song was later covered in the popular musical series GLEE, and Black made it to The Tonight’s Show with Jay Leno to discuss the negative reaction to it.

The Death of a Visionary - Steve Jobs

He may not have strummed crazy leads like Hendrix, had sonorous vocals of Elvis or made millions bang their heads like Kurt Cobain did; but he sure did hold the status of a rock-star. Millions are mourning, as Apple Co-Founder and ex-CEO Steve Jobs passed away on Wednesday, Oct 5, 2011, owing to a rare form of pancreatic cancer. Jobs was 56.

Steve Jobs started Apple with a friend at a Silicon Valley garage in 1976, and turned it into an empire with a decade by rolling out one sensational product after other. He was forced out of Apple a decade later. The 1999 docudrama “Pirates of the Silicon Valley” about the rise of the home personal computer through the rivalry between Apple Computer and Microsoft, also documents Jobs’ journey from the Silcon Valley garage to the time he was forced out of Apple.

He resumed his position as Apple’s CEO in 1997 to rescue the company from a downhill bearing. During his hiatus from Apple, Jobs In 1986, Jobs purchased The Graphics Group which was later renamed Pixar; he became a member of the board of directors of The Walt Disney Company in 2006, following the acquisition of Pixar by Disney.

Steve Jobs would probably be remembered for transforming computers from being a geek’s fixation to an everyday necessity. Jobs is listed as either primary inventor or co-inventor in 338 US patents or patent applications related to a range of technologies from actual computer and portable devices to user interfaces (including touch-based), speakers, keyboards, power adapters, staircases, clasps, sleeves, lanyards and packages.

His initial offerings like the Apple Lisa, NeXT Computer and later on Mac established Apple in a vanguard position the computer bazaar. In 2001, he launched the iPod and marketed it as ‘1,000 songs in your pocket‘. The iPod initially gave Apple a hold over the music industry and later evolved into high-end and influential gadgets like the iPhone and iPad.

Steven Paul Jobs was born on February 24, 1955, to Joanne Simpson, then an unmarried graduate student, and Abdulfattah Jandali, a student from Syria. Simpson gave Jobs up for adoption, though she married Jandali and a few years later had a second child with him, Mona Simpson, who became a novelist.

In the unauthorized biography, The Second Coming of Steve Jobs, author Alan Deutschman reports that Jobs once dated Joan Baez. Jobs married Laurene Powell, on March 18, 1991. The couple has a son and two daughters. Jobs also has a daughter, Lisa Brennan-Jobs (born 1978), from his relationship with Bay Area painter Chrisann Brennan.

Before Apple happened, Jobs traveled to India on a spiritual quest with his friend Daniel Kottke. He visited Neem Karoli Baba at his Kainchi Ashram. He returned to the US as a Buddhist with a shaved head, wearing Indian attire. He was also a fan of the Beatles.

Steve Jobs leaves behind a legacy of innovation, most of which were presented in his trademark black turtleneck, faded jeans and converse shoes. The twitter trend #iPad had emerged as a tribute and to the mark the loss of this great innovator.

Michael S Hart - the Brain Behind eBook

Carvings on cave walls, clay tablets, wood blocks, palm leafs, silk, scrolls, papyrus and paper - the written word has traversed through a myriad of platforms over the course of civilization. The world witnessed a radical uplift with the introduction of books and a similar breakthrough with the creation of the revolutionary eBook (or electronic book). Massive volumes of literature and art took on virtual avatars and were made available on our palm tops, thanks to the pioneering efforts of one man, Michael S Hart.

Michael S Hart was the man whose revolutionary invention redefined the experience of reading. Hart was at the University of Illinois, when he received a user account in their computer system. He realized a deep potential in inter connected computers; although at that point of time the computer systems at the university were mainly used for data processing. After his account was created on July 4, 1971, Hart kept wondering what to do with it. He found an answer when he seized upon a copy of the United States Declaration of Independence, which he received at a grocery store on his way home from watching fireworks that evening.

He typed the entire copy of the declaration into the computer, but he wasn’t allowed to distribute to numerous users via internet. Thus, to avoid crashing the system, he made the text available for people to download instead. That was how Hart founded the Project Gutenberg in 1971. The project was a voluntary effort by Hart to digitize and archive cultural works and to encourage the creation and distribution of eBooks. He began posting digital copies of classics such as works of Homer, Shakespeare, Mark Twain and even Bible. Hart typed most of early postings himself and completed typing a total 313 ebooks by 1987. The mission statements for the project were: 

• "Encourage the Creation and Distribution of eBooks" 
• "Help Break Down the Bars of Ignorance and Illiteracy" 
• "Give As Many eBooks to As Many People As Possible"

Michael Hart

Hart engaged in odd jobs and did an unpaid appointment at the Illinois Benediectine College to solicit donations for the project. Soon, he collaborated with programmer Mark Zinziw to set up an infrastructure of mirror sites and mailing lists, and recruited volunteers who were willing to take the project ahead. This led to an ascending curve in the success of Project Gutenberg. Project Gutenberg is considered the oldest digital library and as of 2011 has claimed over 36000 items as a part of its extensive collection.

Apart from Project Gutenber, Hart was also a member of the RepRap Project that aims at creating a self-replicating machine. An author himself, Hart’s passion for books pedaled the experience of reading books to a new level, making big volumes available in portable formats. His works are available free of charge on the Project Gutenberg server. 

Michael S Hart passed away on September 6, 2011 of a heart attack at his home in Urbana, Illinois. He was 64.

iPad - the Musician’s Genie

In a few years from now, people would probably consider the majestic gramophone as a pre-civilization invention, thanks to the colossal onslaught of handheld technology. Portability has become the ‘apple’ of the eye, lean is in and lean in here to say. The music industry has always welcomed and adorned portable inventions with gadgets getting more and more sleek, smart and sassy. The iPad, from the product lines of Apple Inc, is once such avant-garde merchandise that redefined the experience of music.

A line of tablet computers, iPad has established itself as a necessity among gadget freaks, techies, celebrities, musicians and the music loving hoi-polloi of today. Lyricists and Songwriters widely swear by its efficacy. Since its inception in April 2010, Apple iPad has been the most used mobile devices in the world.

iPad is equipped with thousands of ‘apps’, a colloquial term of software applications aimed at catering to people with diverse tastes and interests. A Pandora box in its own way, iPad offers e-book reader, games, news, video, audio and two of the most important applications for musicians - audio recording and MIDI. The audio recording apps are mainly for music composers, arrangers and journalists. Some of the apps like 'FL Studio Mobile HD', 'VC Audio Pro', 'studio.HD' or 'GarageBand' allows one to sequence, edit, mix, master and produce her/his musical or audio works.

Though the apps have to be purchased from the 'App Store' and downloaded to the device, they can be conveniently used as professional digital audio workstations (DAW). Most of the apps come with 8 to 16 track recorders, drum machines, virtual guitars, virtual synths, virtual amp modelers and virtual samplers. 'Recorder' is a very simple application from Retornyms and one of the most popular recording applications.

Guitarists, Pianists or any other instrumentalists use iPad to enhance their musical abilities. Apps like 'Pianist Pro', 'JamPad', 'DM1 – The Drum Machine', 'Progression – Guitar Tab Editor' or 'SAS-1' help musicians to practice at home or on tour easily. Some of the apps found on the App Store are also known as digital multi-touch jamming machines and can play multiple instruments at once. One just needs to select an audio pattern, instrument like guitar and a chord and the instrument will start strumming automatically in sync with the tempo. One can switch to any chord, note, beat or tempo in real time.

The iPad has the ability to record audio for broadcast, which has made it very popular amongst journalists, making them ditch their laptops and microphones. A journalist can record, edit and master an audio with the apps and the internal microphone and e-mail it from the iPad itself for a radio or television show or share it on Facebook, Twitter or Youtube page. As the iPad is controlled by a multi-touch display and uses a wireless local area network ("Wi-Fi") connection to access local area networks and the Internet, it becomes easy for anyone with little knowledge to handle it.

The other interesting area is 'connecting MIDI controllers to iPad'. The Musical Instrument Digital Interface is a protocol that enables electronic musical instruments like keyboard or drum machine to communicate and synchronize with computers and other electronic equipment. Apple Camera Connection Kit or Line6 MIDI Mobilizer can be used to connect the iPad with any USB device that supports MIDI class and USB MIDI interfaces. Some of the MIDI apps for the iPad are 'Midi Monitor from iOSMIDI', 'AC-7 Core', 'NLogSynth PRO' and 'FL Studio Mobile'.

There are millions of recordings done every day. People and bands who are on the go most of the time, iPad can be a valued device. The British virtual band Gorillaz's 2010 album, The Fall, was created exclusively using the iPad by the group founder Damon Albarn while on tour with the band.

Using a small portable mobile device for recording can be humorous to the traditional musicians, audio engineers and live journalists. But it is not very far when the tablets like iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab or the HTC Flyer will become household devices exercising power or authority over the music and recording industry.

Samosapedia and its "Enthucutlets"

The symbiotic relationship that social media and its user base enjoys is indeed the core concept of many a web based enterprise. It is yet to determine if users leverage the internet as a platform to establish their own forte or there is a strange kind of digital kinship that binds this internet savvy generation. The crowd-sourced South Asian language and culture website 'Samosapedia', happens to be one of my favourite and most visited websites, simply for the fact that it dove into the phenomenon of user generated content and came out with side-splitting results.

It was probably correctly said about digital enterprises, by one of the Winklevoss twins in the Hollywood blockbuster “The Social Network” that ‘reaching there first is all that matters’. Samosapedia, for that matter, is the world’s first and so far the largest repository of South Asian Lingo, thanks to some quirky brain storming by its founders - Vikram Bhaskaran, Arun Ranganathan, Braxton Robbason and Arvind Thyagarajan. The website founded in 2011 is a definitive guide to South Asian Lingo, available in a dictionary format with some hilarious citations. Whether you’re in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Trinidad, Queens or Uganda, or grew up near Brick Lane in London or the Bay Area, South Asian English is bindaas; Samosapedia is the absolute stop where you can pick up this lingo and be the grandmaster in it.

Named after the most famous snack in Indian cuisine Samosa, Samosapedia is a part dictionary, part inside joke for more than 1.5 billion people. It provides the exact meaning, synonym and usage of “Frainship” and what it means when your mother is ‘eating your head’. The ability to speak in English holds a direct pass to upward social mobility in India, thanks to two centuries of British Raj. Mastering the phonetics and vocabulary in the queen’s language is a prestige issue in this part of the world, and of utmost importance. However, English has encountered ‘hazaar tweakings’ ranging from funny, to absolute bizarre. Samosapedia is probably best described as an encyclopaedia to those dialects.

So while meetings get postponed all over the world, only in South Asia do they get "preponed," instead of moved ahead of schedule. If your South Asian friend wants to tell you a "non-veg" joke, be prepared for some dirty humor.

Wake Me Up When September Ends - 'Twitter Trend'

Twitter is a marvellous source of information in the age of hand held technology. While news and current affairs are some of the most common trends, Twitter also lets you stay abreast of the trending discussions and topics. Confused? Well, for all those who do not already know, ‘Hash-tags’ and ‘Trending Topics’ are actually Twitter offerings that lets you know what is being thought about or talked about by people (or peeps) all over the world at any given point of time.

It simply seems natural when “Wake me up when September ends” emerges as a Trending Tweet on the 1st day of September. Apparently hibernating through the September fall is an idea that’s appealing to many and mostly Green Day fans. The song however has different layers to it, apart from the easily assumed notion of sleeping through September.

Green Day, the American rock band released this song as the fourth single on their seventh album, American Idiot. Incidentally, the song is dated September 10, and it is track 11 on the album which paved way for much debate and an initial assumption that ‘Wake me up when September ends’ is about the tragic events of 9/11. It was shortly clarified by Billie Joe Armstrong that the song was written in memory of his father. Armstrong’s father, a jazz musician and truck driver, died of esophageal cancer on September 10, 1982, when Armstrong was only 10 years old. During Green Day’s live performances, the song is also dedicated to deceased guitarist Johnny Ramone of the Ramones, who died in September 2004.

The initial belief that ‘the song is related to 9/11’ could have also been triggered by its music video. The video shows two ‘star crossed lovers’ separated by the boy’s choice to enlist for the United States Marine Corps. The boyfriend goes to battle in Iraq and gets ambushed by insurgents. This is juxtaposed with scenes of the tearful girlfriend, emphasizing the pain and heartache of losing loved ones due to the war. Besides having an anti-war sentiment, ‘Wake me up when September ends’ eventually became a tribute to the victims and survivors of Hurricane Katrina. A live version of the song, recorded on September 3, 2005, at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts was released soon after and dedicated to the hurricane's victims.

There is a very fascinating aspect to the whole micro-blogging fad, especially Twitter. It is hard to determine whether the trends emerge as a result of some telepathic connection between Tweepals or social media users blindly follow budding trends and make them the success that they are. There’s some food for thought, meditate on that. While you do that, don’t forget to play “Wake me up when September ends” on your iPod / Smartphone.

‘The Greatest Jukebox on Earth’ is an online group on the social networking site Facebook, where members post videos as a way of sharing and suggesting albums, songs and artists to the ever growing number of fellow members. 

With a current count of some 2500+ members which keeps steadily growing with every passing day, this group is one that enhances a person’s musical taste, takes one a whirlwind musical journey and is definitely worth being a part of.

It is amazing how music gets passed from one person to another. I hear of something, I pass it on to a friend, who again passes it to another and on and on. And this is exactly how this group functions... like a musical chain it keeps growing with fresh contributions by its huge base of members. 

It’s utterly awe inspiring to see how fast one can get access to a whole range of diverse music through this group. And therein lays the charm of this whole new concept of sharing music.

The scope to broaden one’s musical horizon is immensely facilitated by this group as one gets to hear an assorted range of tracks – from vintage classics to new age rock to indie music to lounge to classic Bollywood .
